But steady selling by origins limited gains, they added, preventing the March contract from testing key resistance at 125.00 cents a lb. March delivery rose to its highest level in more than eight months to settle at 124.00 cents a lb, up 0.95 cent on the day, after ranging from 124.85 to 123.60. On the continuous weekly chart, March's finish was its highest in more than a month. Second-position May ended up 0.90 cent, to 120.45 cents, while the outer months rose 0.50 to 1.80 cents. Prices rose from the outset, bolstered by news Colombian dock workers voted to continue their three-day strike at the Pacific coast port of Buenaventura. A top Colombian coffee official said Friday the work stoppage had delayed the export of about 160,000 60-kg bags of coffee. About 60 percent of all coffee exports are shipped out through Buenaventura. Labor Ministry officials were due to arrive in Buenaventura Friday in a bid to negotiate an end to the strike. Traders await the CFTC Commitment of Traders Report due late Friday, which they expected to show a build in speculative (non-commercial and non-reportable) long positions. "There is potential for the CFTC report to be bearish," one trader said. "The funds are overloaded." Next week, traders will be looking toward Brazil, where an emergency meeting of ACPC members will be held on January 23. The council was called after African nations, backed by Colombia, expressed the need for exports between January and June this year to be cut further. Volume was moderate, at an estimated 6,686 lots. 201010 MET jan 97
