The market worked its way higher early on, hitting its highest point in four days, but aggressive selling by producers brought about a quick reversal. Nearby March hovered near unchanged until late in the session, when locals rushed to exit long positions. "The charts had started to look good in the past few days, but when we got to 10.70 (basis March) we ran into good trade selling and that put a cap on the market," said one trader. March delivery fell 0.05 cent per lb on the day, ending at 10.57 cents, after ranging from 10.56 to 10.70. Second-position May slipped 0.02 cent, to 10.66, raising its premium to spot March to nine points. Traders continued to blame spotty physical offtake for the market's sluggish performance. Syria came in today to buy 13,000 tonnes of each whites and raws, but dealers said more consistent buying would need to enhance the market's tone. On the charts, sugar's stance looked wobbly after failing to clear the 10.70-cent level, traders said. "The market looks technically weak after hitting a new high today and then closing lower," another trader said. "I think it will continue to move downward, but there is a lot of trade buying underneath."
