Lower-than-expected Malaysia palm oil exports during the first 15 days of January had kept the pressure on prices earlier in the day following Wednesday's losses. Malaysian cargo surveyor Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd put local palm oil exports for January 1-15 at 255,320 tonnes against 406,924 in December 1-15. Traders said sentiment was also being affacted by scepticism over the Malaysian stock figures issued on Wednesday by PORLA which showed a high local disappearence of around 163,000 tonnes and lower than expected exports. "Sentiment has turned against palm oil and some people are now wondering if the recent rise in prices was justified," said a trader. Soft oil prices see-sawed during the day with buyers paying higher prices when Chicago was called to open higher, but values soon back tracked when the U.S. market open lower. Lauric oils attracted mainly dealer trading with trader level almost unchanged from Wednesday. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $7.50 to $5 down while products were unchanged to $5 lower. Crude palm oil traded afloat at $550 and $547 while $555 was paid for Jan, $555 and $552.50 for Feb. No further business was reported in products. Dutch soy oil closed 0.75 to 0.50 guilders down after Feb/Apr traded at 96.50 and May/Jul at 97.50, 97.75, 98 and back down to 97.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil finished one to 1.25 guilders lower after Feb traded at 96.75, Feb/Apr at 97.00, 97.50 and 97.75 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. The premium for rape oil over soyoil, based on sellers' prices, was one guilder to 0.75 guilders at the close against 1.50 to par at Wednesday's close. EU sunflower oil traded at $515 a tonne for Feb and $520 a tonne ex-tank for Mar. Closing sellers were $5 to $10 lower. Coconut oil finished $5 up to $5 down after Jan/Feb traded at $765 and $762.50, Feb/Mar at $775, Mar/Apr at $752.50 and Apr/May at $745 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil was $2.50 down and tradeless.
