Traders said talk of a slight stock increase in December reported by the Green Coffee Association of New York quashed an early rally and prompted speculators to take profits. "There was talk the GCA number is going to be up today," one trader said. "Therefore we got some get-me-out type selling." Most traders expected the data, slated for release after today's close, to show an increase of some 50,000 to 100,000 bags on the month. In November, GCA stocks rose by 4,000 bags, to 1,264,000 bags. At the close, most-active March stood at a fresh eight-month high of 122.60, up 0.40 cents per lb on the day, after ranging from 124.20 to 122.00. Second-position May ended 0.15 cent higher, at 119.00 cents, while the outer months finished up 0.35 to down 0.50 cents. Traders said prices ran up at the outset, lifted by news a dock workers strike in Colombia had slowed the country's coffee exports. Private exporters in Colombia said Wednesday the work stoppage by dock workers had paralyzed the 60 percent of the country's coffee exports that are shipped out through the Pacific coast port of Buenaventura. The strike, which was called Tuesday night, led to an order from the National Federation of Coffee Growers' to suspend all exports through the port until the strike was resolved, exporters said. On the charts, traders pegged March resistance at 125.00 cents, while support was seen at 120.00. 161016 MET jan 97
