"Today was extremely quiet," one dealer said. "I think everyone is waiting for the funds to come back in." March delivery rose 0.45 cent per lb on the day, to close at 119.35 cents, after ranging from 119.85 to 117.75. Second-position May ended 0.55 cent higher, at 117.15 cents, while the outer months finished unchanged to down 2.30. Prices opened easier on light commission house profit-taking, dealers said. But trade interest at the lows limited losses, preventing a test of key chart support at 117.50 basis March and prompting the ring to cover their short positions. Light scale-up producer selling capped gains, dealers added. On the charts, traders pegged nearby March support remained at 117.50 cents, followed by 116.65 and 115.00 cents. To the upside, resistance was seen at 120.00 cents, then 121.50 cents and 124.00 cents. After surging to seven-month highs on Tuesday, traders said the March contract has persistently run into producer selling above 120.00 cents. But they added low levels of coffee stocks during the U.S.'s peak consumption period should continue to provide good support. However, open interest remained relatively high at 35,196 lots as of Wednesday, with an estimated 30 percent of positions held by speculators, who traders say are well long. "Some people are just waiting for this market to topple," one trader said. Volume reached an estimated 7,048 lots. 101042 MET jan 97
