Most-active March delivery rose 5.30 cents per lb on the day, to close at 119.35 cents, its highest settlement since May 20, after ranging from 119.80 to 114.00. Second-position May ended 4.60 cents higher, at 117.05 cents, while the outer months gained 3.60 to 4.25. Speculators bid the market up from the outset after the CSCE reported late Monday certified coffee stocks in U.S. warehouses fell by 1,607 60-kg bags in the week ended January 3, to 32,458 bags. No stocks were pending grading or recertification. Producer selling held the March contract below key chart resistance at 117.50 cents for the bulk of the session, dealers said, but a late buying spree by commodity funds activated buy-stops above that level. Fund buying emerged after news Brazil's government is currently working with a range of between 18.5 million and 19.5 million 60-kg bags for the 1997/98 coffee crop, dealers said. Early forecasts have ranged widely between 17.8 million bags and around 30 million bags. An official at Industry and Commerce Ministry, however, stressed it is not an official estimate. "There was pretty good fund buying," said Steve Platt, a Dean Witter analyst in Chicago. "The late move was helped by the Brazil numbers. With the reductions, stocks are going to remain tight. "The fact that Brazil had a 26.5 million bag crop this past year -- with only marginal gains in production outside of Brazil -- and we saw for 1996/97 a balanced situation overall, with eight million bags off the Brazilian crop you are looking at a tightening situation again in 1997/98," Platt added. Additionally, news Costa Rica's 1996/97 coffee production could fall 6.2 percent to 2.3 million 60-kg bags from 2.6 million bags in 1995/96 also contributed to today's rally, dealers said. Costa Rica Coffee Institute (Icafe) said the expected decrease in production was due to a cyclical decline and damage from Hurricane Cesar that ravaged crop areas in the autumn. Volume was heavy, at an estimated 14,350 lots compared with Monday's official tally of 7,121 lots. 081021 MET jan 97
