The market took a pounding early in the session, sliding more than 0.20 cent on the spot month as traders reacted to bearish Commitment of Traders data. But a band of support emerged in the low 10.80s, with industry and speculative buying halting the slide. Commodity funds were keen buyers ahead of the closing bell, concentrating on second-month May futures. "There was some fund buying in the May late in the day," said one trader. "Locals were slightly on the short side, and the rally forced most of them to cover." The early sell-off was largely attributed to the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders report -- released late Monday and valid through December 31 -- which showed speculators to be net long some 24,000 lots. Speculators had since racked up 10,000 additional long positions, traders said, as nearby March rallied late last week to 10-week highs. A failure by the March contract to clear 11.12 on Monday added to the bearish tone, they said, but today's late recovery could spark another test of that level in the coming days. "If it fails at 11.12 three times, then you have to look to the downside," the trader said. Nearby March fell 0.11 cent a lb, to finish at 10.96, trading from 10.84 to 10.99. May slipped 0.05, to 10.04, ranging from 10.94 to 11.06. An estimated 18,273 lots changed hands on the day. informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 081020 MET jan 97
