An early burst of activity in palm oil following the release of Ivan Wong's latest Malaysian report had fizzled out by midday and the market remained quiet for the rest of the day. Palm oil stocks figures issued by Wong were said to be bullish by traders, triggering the early business. Malaysian forecaster Ivan Wong put end-December stocks of palm oil at 805,000 tonnes compared with the Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority's (PORLA) 955,965 tonnes at end-November. Wong said palm oil output during December fell by 17.4 percent against November to 630,000 tonnes while exports were put at at 660,000 tonnes against PORLA's 632,441 tonnes at end-November. Traders said there was also talk that China may be about to lower its import duty on palm oil, increasing demand. But some traders said lowering the import duty would make little difference as palm oil would still be too expensive against soy oil. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $5 up while refined palm oil was $2.50 to $7.50 higher. Coconut oil sellers backed off during the afternoon and by the close offers were $2.50 down to $2.50 up after Jan/Feb traded at $760 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil finished $10 up to $5 down. No trade was reported in the soft oils sector with buyers and sellers along way apart. "Sellers are digging in and won't move until buyers up their bids," said a trader. Dutch soy oil closed 0.50 to one guilder down while rape oil was unchanged. Based on closing sellers' prices the premium for rape oil over soy oil was 0.50 to 3.50 guilders against two to three guilders at Monday's close.
