Prices spent the bulk of the session in negative territory, but steady scale-down trade buying trimmed losses, confining prices to a tight range and preventing a test of key chart support. "It was a range day, a nothing day," one trader said. "It (the March contract) ran out of steam above 116.00 and below 115.50." Key March delivery fell to a session low of 115.30 cents a lb, just shy of the widely watched 115.00-cent support level. By the close, March stood at 116.25 cents, down 0.40 cent a lb on the day, to 116.65 cents. March reached a high of 116.75. Second-position May ended 0.60 cent lower, at 114.35, while the rest finished 0.25 to 1.25 weaker. With little fresh fundamental input, traders said the market continued to trade technically. They said after the 115.00-cent mark, the March contract's next downside target was seen at 112.00 cents, then 110.00 cents. Resistance was pegged at 117.50 cents, followed by 119.00-120.00 cents. Traders await the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders Report, anticipating the figures will show a substantial increase in non-commercial long positions. The biweekly report for the weeks ended December 24 and December 31 will be issued on Monday, January 6, after 1530 EST (2030 GMT) -- a one day delay due to this week's New Year's holiday, the CFTC said.. The day's volume thin, at an estimated at 5,300 lots, traders said. CIJENE KAVE U NEW YORK-U SAD - KAVA Trgovačke spot cijene 06. siječnja 1997. "The market looked tired and a little overdone," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. Key March delivery fell 2.20 cents per lb on the day, to settle at 114.05 cents, after ranging between 116.25 and 113.60. Second-position May ended 1.90 cents lower, at 112.45 cents, while the outer months closed down 1.40 to 2.30. Volume reached an estimated at 5,300 lots. Prices headed lower at the outset on speculative and local selling. The most-active March contract breached key chart support at 115.25-115.00 cents per lb and touched off sell-stops below that level. Scale-down trade buying limited losses, preventing the March contract from testing the next level of support at 113.00-112.50 cents, dealers said. Merrill Lynch's Ganes expects the market to continue to come under pressure as increased availability of coffee prompts producer sales. She said while the cold snap in Europe could help to increase coffee consumption there, mild temperatures in the eastern U.S. were likely to offset demand overseas. Traders also said anticipation of a substantial increase in speculative (non-commercial and nonreportable) long positions ahead of the release of the CFTC Commitment of Traders Report may have also weighed on the market. The biweekly report for the weeks ended December 24 and December 31 will be issued this afternoon after 1530 EST (2030 GMT). The CSCE certified coffee stock figures are also due later today. Last week, the CSCE reported stocks were unchanged in the week ended Dec. 27 at 34,065 bags. Traders are keeping an eye on the weather in Brazil, where heavy rains have left over 60 people dead and thousands homeless. Coffee trees in Brazil's key growing state of Minas Gerais have escaped damage, although growers said the rains prevented the application of pesticides against insects. 071027 MET jan 97
