Light selling by speculators tugged the market to a lower close in what was otherwise an uneventful session. Benchmark March futures fell 0.08 cent a lb to 12.22 cents, having traded between 12.21 and 12.31 cents. Second-position May also fell 0.08, to 11.99, while the back months finished between unchanged and 0.06 lower. "The market drifted lower and attracted some end-year profit-taking," said one trader. "The spreads are showing signs of weakness, but it's hard to put much stock into holiday trading." Scattered trade buying toward the lows once again prevented a test of support at the closely watched 12.20 cent level, traders said. The day's turnover was estimated at 10,755 lots. The CSCE will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the New Year's holiday. Trading will resume on Monday, January 5. 021142 MET jan 98
