Peasant Party criticises government

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) president Branko Hrg said on Saturday the incumbent government was the first that did not consider food production and agriculture as strategic branches of the economy, although he said they were the most potent industries for economic development which required the least investment.

Speaking at a party conference, Hrg said the government was doing nothing and its policy was to completely empty citizens' pockets.

The HSS is worried about the situation in the country and the ruling coalition's lack of ideas in coming up with programmes that would create jobs, according to an annual report which Hrg presented at the conference.

The report says one of the party's best solutions is the reduction of VAT on food but that the government, instead of doing this, has imposed VAT on items which were not subject to it.

Given the latest credit rating downgrade, it is obvious that this government has neither ideas nor solutions, which is becoming extremely dangerous for Croatian citizens, the report says.

It adds that "according to all polls," the HSS is among the five most popular parties. Hrg voiced confidence that it would have a parliamentary group at the next parliamentary election, saying that for that to happen it must do well in next year's local elections.

At the conference, the party discussed its platform for the next four years.
