US ambassador says Bosnia can fight corruption like Croatia

Autor: half
SARAJEVO, Dec 21 (Hina) - Everything Croatia has done in the fight against corruption can be accomplished in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well, but this requires political will, which currently is not there, US Ambassador to Bosnia Patrick Moon has said.

In an interview with Friday's Dnevni Avaz daily, he said corruption in Bosnia was visible at all levels and that ordinary people rightfully expected something to be finally done about it.

The political leaders must notice that, they must speak against corruption and corruption cannot exist in government, Moon said, adding that corruption should not be prosecuted selectively and that such measures should taken against everyone if there was evidence of it.

There was corruption in Croatia ten years ago, after which it formed the anti-corruption office USKOK which was ineffective for several years, but as the country drew closer to the European Union, it reformed and strengthened the legislation and political leaders realised what the EU meant, USKOK become more powerful and more respected, which we know from proceedings against some of the most senior officials, Moon was quoted as saying.

He said the same thing must and would happen in Bosnia when the political leaders showed the necessary degree of responsibility and affirmed that they cared about fighting corruption.

He said it was clear that the police and the prosecutors would not want to tackle corruption without clear signals from the political parties.

Commenting on the situation in the country, Moon said it was good that new authorities had finally been formed on the state level, but warned that a solution to the government crisis in the Federation entity lay solely in talks between the interested political parties, as the international community would not intervene.

If you don't have the votes and the mechanism to change the Federation government, you must all sit down and talk about how to go on, the ambassador said, alluding to attempts by the Social Democratic Party, the HDZ BiH and the HDZ 1990 to replace at any cost the Federation government ministers from the Party of Democratic Action, the Croatian Party of Rights and the People's Party Work for Betterment.
