Serbia suspects war crimes committed on several locations in Croatia

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Nov 21 (Hina) - Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said on Wednesday his office was conducting preliminary investigations into suspicions of war crimes related to Croatia's 1995 Operation Storm, specifically for events in Mali Alan, Dvor Na Uni, Gospic, Kijani, Petrinja and Vrginmost.

Vukcevic said the State War Crimes Prosecutor's Office was not launching the investigations because it was dissatisfied with the Hague war crimes tribunal's acquittal of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, but because it had to wait for their verdicts to become final since, under international law, the UN court has precedence over national courts.

"We are already conducting preliminary investigations on six locations. We have heard many witnesses," Vukcevic said, adding that they were also questioned about Croatia's 1995 Operation Flash.

He said the investigations were being conducted in cooperation with the Veritas association.

Suspicions of war crimes committed during and after Operation Storm which the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor's Office is working on refer to Kijani, a village near Gracac where 14 Serb civilians were allegedly killed, said Vukcevic.

He said 21 Croatian Serb rebels were wounded and then taken prisoner in Mali Alan, a village on Mount Velebit, on 22 January 1993. Some were allegedly killed and a number massacred to death.

The Prosecutor's Office suspects that nine handicapped civilians were killed in Dvor Na Uni on 8 August 1995.

It is also investigating the deaths of 13 persons in Gospic, two in Donji Lapac, seven in Udbina, 17 in Vrhovine and two at Plitvice Lakes.

The preliminary investigations also refer to Petrinja, where the remains of 66 people were exhumed, and to Vrginmost, Vukcevic said.
