More than 1,000 pilgrims attended the service. They walked from the town hospital to the memorial cemetery in tribute to the victims of the siege and fall of Vukovar into the hands of Serb and Yugoslav People's Army forces in the autumn of 1991.
Archbishop D'Errico said he was guided by two thoughts in his prayer - the sad memory of the Vukovar victims, which he said human logic could hardly understand and justify; and the future and the relations that should be built in light of the new political context.
Recalling that politicians, military officials, diplomats and other delegations were at the service, he called for praying for them and all people of good will who advocated peace and the progress of both Croatia and the neighbouring nations.
The nuncio prayed for no more war and for stronger trust between peoples so that they could build the future, progress and peace together.
