Symposium held on Vukovar Memorial Day

Autor: half
VUKOVAR, Nov 15 (Hina) - The Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences on Thursday organised a symposium called "Vukovar 91 - Truth and/or denying (between science and manipulation)" on the occasion of Vukovar Memorial Day and the 21st anniversary of the occupation of the eastern Croatian town in the Yugoslav-Serbian military aggression.

The event in Zagreb drew about 20 domestic and foreign historians, demographers, sociologists, theologians, philologists and those who took part in the defence of the town in 1991.

The head of the institute's Vukovar branch, Drazen Zivic, said much was wrongly and manipulatively said about the defence of Vukovar and the crimes committed against its residents.

He mentioned the Hague war crimes tribunal's trials, trials against Croatian defenders, failure to indict those who ordered and executed the attack on Vukovar in 1991, and the "disgraceful" sentences against former Yugoslav army officers Mile Mrksic, Veselin Sljivancanin and Miroslav Radic as indicative of institutions and interest groups that were not interested in the truth.

The head of the Croatian Homeland War Memorial and Documentation Centre, Ante Nazor, said the 1990s war on the territory of the former Yugoslavia was "caused by the continuity of the Greater Serbia policy" and not by a "conglomerate of bad policies" as has also been claimed by some "senior Croatian officials."
