PM talks connecting south with rest of country

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Thursday accused the strongest opposition party, the HDZ, of trying to foment tensions and spread fear among the public with its draft resolution on principles of connecting the southern Dubrovnik-Nerevta County with the rest of the country in transport terms.

He was speaking at a session of the government, which recommended that parliament reject a motion by the HDZ group to adopt the resolution in order to make all Croatian citizens equal in constitutional and legal terms.

Milanovic said the government, in cooperation with European Union institutions, was considering options for connecting the south with the rest of the country and that it would opt for the construction of a bridge or some other form of practical, useful and cost-efficient connection.

"We are trying to do something, something big and useful, with this European money which is also our money," he said.

Transport Minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic said the government was actively seeking an acceptable option to connect the south with the rest of the country, including an EU-funded study to be drawn up by June 1, 2013 which envisages the construction of the Peljesac bridge and the Neum corridor as well as a ferry line.

Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said the incumbent government was taking a serious approach to the issue of connecting the south with the rest of the country, unlike previous ones, adding that a preliminary feasibility study was being drawn up, involving European funding.

The government also recommended that parliament reject draft conclusions on state property management whereby the Labour Party wants the government to draw up a management strategy within 30 days.

Milanovic said such a strategy had not been adopted in Croatia to date and that it was flippant to demand it be passed in 30 days. He said such matters could not be solved with strategies, notably those passed in 30 days.

The government also took a position on the Labour Party's request for an interpretation of the Gender Equality Act provision stipulating the gradual increase in the number of women candidates on election slates by next spring's local elections.

Milanovic said the law would have to be changed so that a higher number of women candidates could run in the 2015 parliamentary election.

The government gave its consent to the Interior Ministry to procure 64 vehicles through operational leasing, and sent to parliament a final bill of amendments to the law on electronic communications as well as draft national action plan for the prevention of narcotics abuse in the 2012-14 period.
