Autor: half
ZAGREB, Sept 30 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament will not sit next week because of Speaker Boris Sprem's death and a special session on the occasion of Independence Day has been cancelled, parliament said on Sunday.

A book of condolence is expected to be opened in parliament tomorrow.

Sprem, who suffered from multiple myeloma, died at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston early Sunday morning, Central European Time. He was 56.

Science, Education and Sports Minister Zeljko Jovanovic extended condolences to Sprem's family, saying Sprem was a dear friend, "an honest and principled man, a true Social Democrat at heart" who left behind "high criteria of honourable, moral and professional conduct."

Condolences were also extended by the speaker of the Bosnian parliament's lower house, Bozo Ljubic, to Croatian Parliament Acting Speaker Josip Leko, Croatian citizens and Sprem's family.
