HDZ comments on Josipovic's consensus statement

Autor: half
ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - The strongest opposition party, the HDZ, said in a press release on Monday that it generally supported President Ivo Josipovic's statement that a consensus was necessary on national development issues, but added that the development of the state, like the President stressed, was just one of the Croatian policy goals on which consensus was necessary.

The press release was issued after reporters asked HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko to comment on the statement Josipovic made earlier today.

The HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) reiterated its call to launch as soon as possible a discussion to define all the strategic state interests, saying that one of the first should be the definition of principles on which the country rests so as to eliminate any dispute.

The party said it agreed with part of Josipovic's statement that development was not a matter of one or even two terms of office and that it could not be launched without long term stability or at least certainty that projects would be carried through regardless of who was in power, recalling that the Zoran Milanovic Cabinet abruptly stopped the construction of the Peljesac Bridge upon coming to power.

The HDZ proposes that the bridge, as a strategic national, political and economic project which would link the south and the rest of the country, be the first strategic goal on which the HDZ, the government and all other relevant forces in the country reach a consensus.

The HDZ also called on the ruling coalition to take responsibility and keep its election campaign promises.
