Gov't holds special meeting on Statehood Day

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - The Croatian government held a special session on the occasion of Statehood Day on Monday with President Ivo Josipovic and the Parliament's Deputy Speaker, Josip Leko, in attendance.

Addressing the session Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic emphasised the importance of the unity at the current times of crisis.

Extending his gratitude to Croatians who defended the country in the war and gave their lives or health for the present-day Croatia, Milanovic called for the unity and for using the maximum potentials the Croatians had to recover from the current crisis.

"There is no more excuse," the premier said adding that the Croatians must be the masters of their destiny and success.

Our priority is to make Croatia a stable, independent and prosperous country in this region, taking into account all historical circumstances and the fact that this is today the Croatian state and that we are its masters and everybody who wants to live in accordance with the existing highly-civilised standards in Croatia is welcome, he added.

The Parliament's Deputy Speaker Leko recalled that since the decision of the Croatian parliament 21 years ago on the country's sovereignty and independence, Croatia had passed a huge path. Today, Croatia is a democracy and a respectable member of the international community, Leko said.

Currently, Croatia is faced with a serious economic crisis, and just as in 1991 we can also muster wisdom and find solutions to embark on the path towards the recovery, protecting the social justice, he added.

President Josipovic pointed out the importance of the responsibility of all citizens, including politicians, for Croatia's further development.

He urged politicians to find a consensus on all important national matters.

The head of state added that the Croatian citizens must know why some measures, notably those unpopular, must be taken.

Overcoming the current situation requires Investments and understanding of our partners in the world who, just like Croatian citizens, want to see a clearly defined development strategy for this and next decade and clearly defined goals, Josipovic said.
