The survey was carried out in 2011 by SurveyLan in 14 countries, including Croatia, and it assessed students’ proficiency in listening, reading and writing. Respondents were aged 14 or 15. In Croatia, 3,342 pupils from the eighth grade in 144 schools were covered by the analysis.
As many as 70 percent of them learn English as the first foreign language and 23.4% learn German as the second foreign language.
The aim of the survey is to establish a European Indicator of Language Competence, said the Croatian national co-ordinator of this testing, Jasminka Buljan Culej.
Test results are related to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
The minister said that the findings of the test in Croatia showed that the country did not need to fear for those pupils.
Other countries covered by the survey are Belgium, Bulgaria, England, Estonia, France, Greece, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
