Croatian MP confident Serbia will continue policy of cooperation

Autor: half
BELGRADE, April 27 (Hina) - A member of the Croatian Parliament and president of the Serb People's Council, Milorad Pupovac, said in Belgrade on Friday he was confident that Serbian citizens would choose at upcoming elections a path that would not endanger what had been achieved in cooperation with neighbouring countries so far.

He was speaking at a conference on the position of Serbs in neighbouring countries.

"We hope the policy of cooperation in the region, the policy of strengthening peace between Serbia and us Serbs in neighbouring countries, and the policy which will bring Serbia and the countries we live in under the same European roof is the policy Serbian citizens will vote for," said Pupovac, who also chairs the Croatian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.

He was confident that Croatia's new government would support the Serbs in Croatia even more strongly and that cooperation would continue after next month's elections in Serbia.

The Belgrade conference brought together Serb representatives from Albania, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Croatia, and Montenegro.

Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic said political elites in Serbia and neighbouring countries should do their utmost so that the current and future generations could live without ethnic discord and should also ensure economic progress and real cooperation.

"The Serbian government is the main generator of regional cooperation at all levels and on all issues. Our goal is to solve all issues through dialogue, fairly and thoroughly," he said.

Cvetkovic said the future of the Serbs in the neighbouring countries could be certain "only if we all take the paths of peace, if we embrace the European standards of equality, if we open and complete the reconciliation process."
