The proposed budget provides for 280 people to be hired by EU institutions in connection with Croatia's accession, scheduled for mid-2013. For that purpose, the European Council and the Council of the EU would need 46 people, the European Commission 142, the European Court of Justice 63, the Court of Auditors 13, the Economic and Social Committee 10, and the Committee of the Regions 6 people.
Budget Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski, who presented the draft, said that as far as Croatia was concerned planned costs included only administrative costs and not the amounts Croatia was due to receive from the EU budget. He said that those amounts would be specified in amendments to the budget after the completion of the process of ratification of Croatia's EU accession treaty.
