Q4 2011 Labour Force Sample Survey unemployment 13.9 pct

ZAGREB, April 21 (Hina) - The Labour Force Sample Survey unemployment rate in Croatia in the fourth quarter of 2011 was 13.9 per cent, up 1.8 percentage points on the year, according to findings presented by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics earlier in the week.

The findings show that, broken down by statistical region, the unemployment rate in Northwestern Croatia was 8.9 per cent, as against 14.4 per cent in Adriatic Croatia and 20.1 per cent in Central and Eastern Croatia.

In 2011, the survey unemployment rate was 14.3 per cent in the first quarter, 13.5 per cent in the second and 12.2 per cent in the third quarter.

According to the survey, as defined by the International Labour Organisation, there were 238,000 jobless in Croatia in the fourth quarter of 2011, up 28,000 on the year.

The figure and the rate differ significantly from administrative sources.

The Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) reported that 304,000 jobless were registered in Q4 2011 and that the unemployment rate was 17.9 per cent.

Of the 238,000 jobless according to the survey, 83.9 per cent was registered with the HZZ, while the remaining 16.1 per cent was not interested in registering.

Of the 304,000 jobless registered with the HZZ, 34.2 per cent do not meet the international unemployment criteria.

Of 3.79 million people above the age of 15, 1.72 million were active, while more than 2.07 million were not.

In Q4 2011, 1.479 million Croatians were employed, down 49,000 on the year. The employment rate was 39.1 per cent, as against 40.5 per cent in Q4 2010.
