Croatian Parliament begins its fourth sitting

Autor: vmic
ZAGREB, April 18 (Hina) - On Wednesday morning the Croatian Parliament began its fourth sitting, which will last four weeks and end on May 11. MPs added eight more items to the agenda, which now has 32 items.

Among the newly-added items is a motion for a vote of confidence in the new Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Infrastructure, Sinisa Hajdas Doncic, who is succeeding Zlatko Komadina after he resigned for health reasons.

Also on the agenda is a motion by the strongest opposition party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), for a no-confidence vote in the Minister of Science, Education and Sport, Zeljko Jovanovic.

The government introduced eight bills, including amendments to the Public Assembly Act which would again allow peaceful protests in St Mark's Square in Zagreb, the seat of the Government, Parliament and the Constitutional Court, after they were banned seven years ago.

MPs will discuss several opposition-sponsored bills, including those by the HDZ and the Labour Party that the right of the President of the Republic to a privileged pension should be reversed as part of amendments to the law regulating the rights and duties of state officials.

HDZ deputy Josip Salapic said that the government had introduced too few bills and nearly all of them for discussion under fast-track procedure, adding that this was proof that the government was not working enough.

Speaker Boris Sprem dismissed the criticism, saying that it was not true that the government was not doing its job well. He said it was interesting that the HDZ had introduced its bills for discussion under fast-track procedure.

The Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) requested a break to present its position on the decision by the Parliament Presidency to cancel Parliament's sponsorship of commemoration ceremonies at Bleiburg, Austria. It said that the decision required a discussion in plenary session.

Sprem said he would grant the request after Question Time.
