Human rights ombudsman says most complaints refer to court work

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, April 4 (Hina) - The Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman received 1,900 complaints in 2011 as against 1823 the year before, and most complaints again referred to the work of judicial and administrative authorities, Ombudsman Jurica Malcic said in an annual report to Parliament.

The 134-page report warns that the situation in the Croatian judiciary produced serious consequences for citizens' rights and the country's economic development.

"The situation in the judiciary is still unsatisfactory," Mlacic wrote in the report.

Many of the 1,900 complaints refer to the performance of administrative bodies, notably to government agencies, which prompted the ombudsman to call for more efforts to free the public administration of political influence.

Concerning the issues of housing reconstruction and property restitution, the number of complaints declined.

Last year, the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman closed 1,093 out of 2,356 cases.
