Croatia asks Serbia to allow Maric to serve his sentence in Croatia

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - Croatia on Tuesday asked Serbia to transfer Croatian national Veljko Maric, who has been found guilty of war crimes by a Serbian court, back to Croatia to serve the remainder of his 12-year prison term, the Croatian Justice Ministry said.

The formal request was forwarded by Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic to Serbia in accordance with the Council of Europe's 1983 Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons after Maric's wife Marijana Loncarevic Maric asked for the transfer of her husband back to Croatia.

According to the ministry's statement, Miljenic discussed the Maric case with Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic two weeks ago.

On 21 March, the War Crimes Department of the Belgrade Appellate Court upheld the guilty verdict and 12-year imprisonment for Croatian veteran Veljko Maric, accused of the murder of Petar Slijepcevic in the Croatian village of Rastovac in October 1991.

Maric has been behind bars in Belgrade since his arrest on the Serbian-Bulgarian border in April 2010.
