Croatian deputy PM: Anti-discrimination policy goal of all governments in region

Autor: half
BUDVA, March 19 (Hina) - Speaking at a regional conference in Montenegro on the rights of sexual minorities, Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Milanka Opacic said on Monday the relationship towards minority communities showed a country's level of democracy and that the goal of all governments in the region was to build a society tolerant towards minorities.

"We must build societies in which there is room for everyone and where nobody will be discriminated against on any grounds," Opacic said in Budva, adding that it was necessary to constantly educate citizens so that society was more tolerant towards sexual and other minorities.

The conference "Together Against Discrimination" was being held under the auspices of the Montenegrin government, with the assistance of a number of international organisations.

Opening the event, Montenegrin PM Igor Luksic said the purpose was to promote the Council of Europe's recommendations on measures for fighting discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"It's a good opportunity to exchange opinions and affirm our readiness to work on building a contemporary concept of protection of human rights and liberties, and to send out the message about our commitment to concrete activities" in order to achieve and improve the protection of LGBT persons and their visibility, said Luksic.

The director of the Serbian government's department for human and minority rights, Nenad Djurdjevic, said Serbia was committed to the fight against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, as confirmed in a new national strategy.

Kosovo Justice Minister Hajrudin Kuci said his government firmly believed that applying laws and implementing an anti-discrimination policy was one of the fundamental obligations.

"That will guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation in all walks of life," said Kuci.

The Budva conference drew government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the European Commission and the Council of Europe as well as prominent international experts, scientists and representatives of human rights protection organisations.
