UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON RETURN OF CULTURAL PROPERTY

Autor:
PROPERTY NEW YORK, Nov 4 (Hina) - The UN General Assembly adopted Wednesday the Resolution on the return or compensation of the cultural property to the countries of origin. A total of 106 members, among which was Croatia, voted for the Resolution, while 25 abstained. The majority of the European countries abstained, which is to no surprise, as their museums keep cultural treasures belonging to other countries. That especially concerns Great Britain and France. Croatia spoke before the General Assembly and demanded the return of works of art which the former Yugoslav People's Army looted from the Town Museum and private collections in Vukovar (UNPA east), and took away to Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica (Serbia, Vojvodina). The Crotian representative also demanded the return of works of art from other occupied territories of Croatia. He also spoke on the distruction of Croatian historic cities, Dubrovnik, Sibenik and Zadar. He thanked UNESCO for their efforts in the reconstruction of Dubrovnik and many other facilities of cultural importance in Croatia. (end) j-jt 041151 MET nov 93
