New foreign minister comments on priorities

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - The European Union whose member Croatia is expected to become in July 2013, Croatia's new role in the region upon the finalisation of its EU accession negotiations and the continuation of the development of partnership with the United States are some of the priorities of Croatia's foreign policy, said new Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic upon the ceremony of transfer of power from her predecessor Gordan Jandrokovic on Friday.

"As for the EU, we have now three priorities: the referendum, the (border) arbitration agreement with Slovenia and the monitoring," Pusic told Hina.

She said that that preparations on the EU accession referendum should soon start. Earlier in the day, the Croatian parliament set the referendum for 22 January.

The new minister sees a possibility for Croatia to assume a new role in the region after Zagreb and the EU signed the Accession Treaty.

"It is important for all of us to start behaving according to European standards," Pusic said adding that fulfilment of strict standards was more important for individual EU aspirants than for the EU.

As for the region, Pusic said that the United States wanted this region to be safe and stable.

"The region is always an important topic in the communication with the USA. We know the region better than anyone else," Pusic said, recalling that Croatia has also a Mediterranean dimension.

Jandrokovic said that the region would be one of priorities of the new government. He said that he expected of the new government to work on the strengthening of Croatia's position within NATO and the EU.
