KARLOVAC, Sep 7 (Hina) - A meeting between UNPROFOR Commander for
UNPA North General Jozeph Chmiel and assistant to the Croatian
Interior Minister Mladen Markac was held today in Karlovac (50 km
S. of Zagreb) behind closed doors.
The talks focused on the situation in Turanj (a suburb of
Karlovac) and on the Plitvicka road, where Moslem refugees from
Velika Kladusa have been stranded for 17 days already, said Markac.
The Croatian party requested that UNPROFOR should be more
responsible regarding the problem on the refugees in the so-called
blue zone, i.e. to establish the situation in the zone as it was
before the refugees' arrival.
If UNPROFOR solves the problem on the refugees tomorrow, the
Croatian police will immediately lift a blockade from the Plitvicka
road, stressed Markac.
General Chmiel said that the UNHCR had competence in solving
the problem.
The situation in Turanj is getting worse. Infectious diseases
are registered mostly among children, said the Karlovac medical
center.
