ZAGREB, June 14 (Hina) - UNPROFOR civilian police started
establishing control in the disengagement zone at 08:00 hours this
morning, UNPROFOR spokesman in Zagreb Matthew Nerzig told reporters
on Tuesday.
"We are implementing the first part of Article 9 of the March
29 Agreement," he said, adding that the next stage would be the
deployment of "two hundred policemen from each side."
Under the Agreement, the Croatian and the Serbian sides are
entitled to deploy up to 200 policemen each in the 2-km wide
stretch of land between the two disengagement lines. The policemen
will carry small arms only and will work under UNPROFOR
supervision.
Nerzig said there were reasons for suspicion that "one or the
other side was not going to allow the implementation of this part
of the Agreement." "That is why we have adopted a step-by-step
approach," he explained. "If all goes well with the deployment of
UNCIVPOL, then we will soon be able to pass onto the deployment of
200 policemen from each side in the zone," he concluded.
