A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1

Autor:
ZAGREB, June 1 (Hina) - Today's Zagreb daily newspaper VJESNIK brings on the front page a report on a session of the Bosnian constitutional assembly, headlined "Zubak the president and Ganic the vice-president of the Federation of B-H." "Role of the non-aligned in defusing world crises" says the headline of a report from a ministerial meeting of non-aligned countries currently taking place in Cairo. Croatia is present at the conference as an observer and Bosnia-Herzegovina as a guest. Ahead of talks to solve problems in Parliament, Vjesnik carries a statement by Drazen Budisa on behalf of opposition parties, headlined "House of Representatives once again!", and a statement by Adam Mestrovic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) headlined "No doubt about legitimacy (of lower house session)." In the commentary headlined "Blessing", Darko Pavicic says that with their presence at a Statehood Day celebration on Mount Medvednica the highest church dignitaries "have defined a sort of a modus of behaviour for other shepherds to follow, for those who have consecrated everything, from telephone exchanges to sugar factories." Vjesnik also brings a big article on the situation in Serb- occupied territories in Croatia, headlined "Desperate Serbs also have to flee." The author quotes Serb refugees as saying that "darkness swallows anyone who dares speak about the Krajina and local bosses with even the slightest irony" and that various gangs and forces loyal to Captain Dragan (a Serb mercenary) are cruising the occupied parts of northern Dalmatia. The author doubts that relations with belligerent Serb authorities could be normalized. Another Zagreb-based daily newspaper VECERNJI LIST brings on the front page a report on the session of Bosnia-Herzegovina's constitutional assembly and reports by president of the Federation Kresimir Zubak and vice-president Ejup Ganic. The paper also carries statements by Social Liberal leader Drazen Budisa on behalf of the opposition and Adam Mestrovic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). "A run on kunas" says an article on the introduction of the new Croatian currency. In his column "Patriotic nagging", Milan Ivkosic comments on problems in the Croatian Parliament. The paper brings an interview with head of the Croatian Disabled War Veterans's Union. In commemoration of Croatian World War II victims buried at Bleiburg in Austria, Catholic priest Ante Bakovic, originator of the Croatian Demographic Movement, proposes that this event be observed as a national holiday on May 15. 011327 MET jun 94
