UN, NATO CLOSELY MONITORING DEPLOYMENT OF FORCES IN BOSNIA

ZAGREB, May 25 (Hina) - NATO was closely monitoring all events, particularly the deployment of military forces, in Bosnia and would be ready to act if called to do so by UNPROFOR, the UN in Zagreb told Hina today. Spokesman Chris Gunnes would not confirm rumours floating around UN that the targets of possible air strikes were already known. "It is a process - I cannot say that we already know which targets will be selected," he said. Unofficially, it has been said that senior NATO and UNPROFOR officials defined priority targets - the first to be attacked if UNPROFOR called for close air support - at a high-level meeting last year. The meeting also agreed that any mililitary target could be attacked, not only the particular position, cannon or tank which was used in a particular attack. UNPROFOR Commander, Gen. Rupert Smith, yesterday set an ultimatum to Bosnian Serbs to return all the heavy weaponry seized from UN-guarded arms depots within the exclusion zone before noon today. Smith set Friday noon as the deadline for surrendering or pulling other heavy weaponry out of a 20-km radius.
