BOSNIA ACCUSES U.N. OF FAILURE TO RESPOND TO SERB ATTACKS

Autor:
SARAJEVO, May 16 (Hina) - Bosnian Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic today accused UNPROFOR officials in Sarajevo of behaving contrary to their mandate as they refused to request NATO air strikes against Serb forces besieging the city. Following the talks with the UN commander for Sector Sarajevo, General Herve Gobilliard, Silajdzic said UNPROFOR rejected the Bosnian government's request for a response to Serb attacks in line with the UNPROFOR mandate and NATO ultimatum. UNPROFOR spokesman Garry Coward said on General Gobilliard's behalf that there could be no NATO action as long as the two parties were engaged in fighting. According to available information, two civilians were wounded by shrapnel and another was wounded by a sniper bullet in central Sarajevo today. Serbs fired three shells on a building housing the office of UN special coordinator for Sarajevo William Eagleton. The attack caused considerable material damage but no casualties as UN staff were in the shelter during the day. (hina) mm rm 161440 MET may 95
