ZAGREB, Jan 11 (Hina) - The UN special rapporteur for missing and
deported persons, Manfred Novak, informed the Croatian embassy in
Geneva that he had sent 401 files on missing and detained Croatian
citizens to the Yugoslav government requesting information on their
fate.
Croatia is now awaiting Belgrade's response to the UN request,
the head of the Croatian government commission for detained and
missing persons, Ivica Kostovic, today said at a meeting with
representatives from associations of the families of detained and
missing persons.
Government Minister Juraj Njavro said two former Yugoslav army
officers, Sljivancanin and Mrksic, knew what had happened with
people who went missing after the fall of Vukovar.
He stressed that Yugoslavia was withholding information on
this problem because of "a guilty conscience."
Talks on missing and detained persons in Serbian aggression
against Croatia are held almost every week. The Croatian government
commission has obtained a release of 423 people as a result of such
talks.
