OSIJEK, Dec 12 (Hina) - Trichinous pork from the UN-administered
eastern Croatia was discovered in Osijek, Dr. Miroslav Lederer of
the Osijek-based veterinarian inspection service, told reporters on
Thursday.
The pork was brought to Osijek by a thoughtless UNTAES member.
Trichinous meat was discovered in a routine check, Lederer
said. It had come from Bijelo Brdo in the UN Administered area,
outside the jurisdiction of the Croatian sanitary inspection.
"It has been established that the meet was brought to Osijek
by an irresponsible UNTAES member," Lederer said.
Osijek county authorities had warned two months ago about the
possible spread of infection from an UNTAES market situated on the
separation line on the Osijek-Klisa road, Lederer said.
"These warnings were motivated by professional and public-
health reasons, not political ones," Lederer said.
Dusko Rasic of the county public health office said the Bijelo
Brdo area was endemic for trichinosis.
"UNTAES officials failed to realise the danger of spreading
the infection," Rasic said.
The best solution to prevent infection would be to reintegrate
public-health services in the UN-administered area into Croatia's
leagl system, which would ensure strict sanitary supervision, Rasic
said, adding that Gen. Klein would be notified of the case.
