SARAJEVO, Aug 27 (Hina) - A US vehicle hit a mine on Monday while
on a routine patrol about ten kilometres southwest of the Sava
river town of Brcko, on a road regularly used by the NATO-led
peace Implementation Force (IFOR) for the transfer of its troops.
Two US soldiers escaped injury thanks to their armoured
"Humvee" vehicle, IFOR spokesman Max Marriner told a news
conference in Sarajevo on Tuesday.
Marriner said that there was no evidence that the mine had
been planted recently, adding that it was more likely that it
remained undetected on the road which was considered cleared of
mines.
The spokesman recalled that there were between six and eight
million various mines in more than 10,000 mine fields in the
former Yugoslavia.
