status" of the Croatian Danubian area, which they call the Srijem
district. #L#
The "special status" means their right to their national
anthem, flag and coat of arms, their own monetary and fiscal
system, the demilitarization of the Danubian area which is under
UNTAES control and dual citizenship (Croatian and Yugoslav).
The organizers of the protest also organized the signing of a
petition containing their requests which they are to submit to the
UN and to the Transitional Administrator for Eastern Slavonia,
Baranja and Western Srijem, General Jacques Klein.
UNTAES spokesman Phillippe Arnold confirmed that the protest
had taken place, and said that the protest had been a part of a
religious Sunday ceremony which had been addressed by four
representatives of non-government and non-party organizations.
He stressed that none of the local Serb leaders or UNTAES
representatives had been present at the protest.
