A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

Autor:
ZAGREB, 29 May (Hina) - 'The State' - reads the headline of a "VJESNIK" article by the paper's editor-in-chief Nenad Ivankovic who writes about the last six years of establishment of the Croatian state. Ivankovic also tackles future tasks on the economic and political planes. 'Croatian Blitzkrieg' reads the headline of a commentary by Fran Visnar on the development of the Croatian armed forces. In his commentary, Visnar focuses on the speed the Croatian army had been established with, which is a fact that was registered by many international military academies. Mario Marusic analyses a statement publicized by the Muslim Coordination Office for Elections for Western European Countries, according to which 53% of Mostar Croats who in 1991 had permanent residence in Mostar, do not have the right to participate in the elections. "How can anyone (may he be a politician, a Serb or a Frenchman) even imagine that people from eastern Slavonia would agree to more Serb neighbours than there used to be according to the 1991 census", asks Stjepan Cuic in his commentary headlined 'When Aggression Fails, Demography Takes Over'. "VECERNJI LIST" journalist Zeljko Kruselj writes that Croatia should 'turn to future' and the general process of European integration 'since it is the basis of Croatia's historical heritage'. 'You have to earn credit from your voters', says Defence Minister Gojko Susak in an interview with the paper's editor-in- chief Branko Tudjen. Commenting on Croatia's international position, Susak stresses: 'It is often stated that Washington's interest for Croatia will wane. I think that it is a wrong supposition. Croatia has such geostrategic and geopolitical characteristics that the United States will always find us interesting'. The paper also brings an interview with the Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa under the headline 'Control of Salaries No Longer Necessary'. (hina) rm mm 291106 MET may 96
