"The talks were very useful, and the atmosphere showed that
Chernomyrdin and the Russian government are interested in the
development of relations with Croatia and respect its state and
national interests", Matesa said after the meeting.
He invited Chernomyrdin to visit Croatia, which the Russian
Prime Minister accepted with pleasure. The exact date of the visit
will be set later.
While discussing economic cooperation, the two premiers
pointed out plans to include Russia in the enlargement of the
Adriatic oil pipeline, the building of new gas pipelines and joint
investments in shipbuilding.
Matesa and Chernomyrdin also talked about the political
situation in Croatia and the region. Chernomyrdin particularly
supported efforts to normalize the relations between Zagreb and
Belgrade.
Tonight Matesa is to meet Croatian business people working in
Russia.
He is returning to Zagreb tomorrow.
