PAZIN, Apr 19 (Hina) - The Istria County Countil today unanimously
endorsed the Government's ban on a referendum on the construction
of the thermoelectrical power plant Plomin 2, which had been
scheduled for April 21.
In an official ruling forwarded to the Council, the Ministry
of Urban Planning, Construction and Housing justified the ban by
quoting a 1984 government document duly authorising the building of
the plant, which is to run on coal and has recently aroused serious
environmental concerns in the region.
Even though ready to obey the ministry's instructions in the
matter, the Council decided to pursue every legal avenue to
eventually obtain an authorisation to hold the referendum.
The session was attended by Minister in the Government Branko
Mocibob who exhorted councilmen to exert good judgment and try to
defuse tensions.
"We all want to find a joint solution to the problem of Plomin
2," he said.
