ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament's House of
Representatives on Thursday concluded a dicussion on draft
amendments to the law on the election of representatives to the
bodies of local government and self-government.
The Government had proposed that a proportional electoral
system be applied in elections to the bodies of local self-
government, with one local self-government unit representing one
constituency, Assistant Administration Minister Antun Palaric told
the session.
Vice Vukojevic of the Legislative Committee argued for a mixed
electoral system under which one fourth of the members of a local
self-government body would be elected by majority system and three
quarters by proportional representation.
Opionions of the clubs of parliamentary representatives ranged
from those who described the draft amendments as acceptable (Luka
Trconic of the Croatian Peasant Party) to those who rejected them
completely (Ivica Racan of the Social Democratic Party).
