said that the U.S. peace force would remain in Macedonia even after
the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of
year. #L#
The U.S. troops in Macedonia had fulfilled their task aimed at
preventing a military conflict in the area, Perry said, adding that
the mission of 800 U.S. soldiers within the U.N. force, who are
controlling the border between Macedonia and Kosovo (southern
Serbia), would continue.
Perry warned that the situation in the majority Albanian
province of Kosovo was difficult and that it was the reason why the
U.S. forces in Macedonia had not been given the date of their
withdrawal from the area.
U.S. congressman Eliot Engel, a member of the U.S. delegation
in Albania, said that Kosovo could explode any time. According to
Engel, the Albanians living in Kosovo were the most oppressed
people in Europe. He added that the Albanians should have the right
to self-determination as all other peoples.
