NATO would keep its checkpoints in order to effectively
supervize zones of separation and facilities like airports in
Sarajevo and Tuzla, because there was danger of terrorist attacks,
Dutch Colonel Frans Feskens said in Sarajevo on Tuesday.
NATO troops now protect electroenergetic, gas and water works
in the area around Sarajevo in order to prevent them being
destroyed during the transitional period lasting till March 19.
Under the Dayton Peace Accord, the removal of all checkpoints
and full freedom of movement was to be established in the whole of
Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, IFOR representatives said that their
supervision was not inconsistent with the Accord as it is crucial
for an overall military safety.
NATO troops have been escorting civilians only between Gorazde
and other parts of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. As for
safety in other parts of the country, it is the responsibility of
the signatories of the Accords.
