ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Customs officials yesterday intercepted a
shipment of smuggled Marlboro cigarettes. The officers seized the
whole cargo, complete with the incriminated container and the truck
used to ship it from the railway station in Rijeka to Split,
Customs Office said in a statement. The statement added that the
smugglers had also been arrested.
The container crossed the Croatian border with fake
documentation purporting it contained building material. The fraud
was not immediately discovered but the suspicions of customs
officials were aroused and they finally tracked the container to
Split.
Instead of reporting to the customs office in Split as per
instructions, the container made for the Split suburbs, where it
was promptly discovered by customs officials ably assisted by local
police.
A thorough search of the container revealed a cargo of
cigarettes worth about a million kuna on the black market, the
Customs office specified.
