It was believed that the disease was caused by a virus. The
symptoms were rash and mildly increased temperature.
The disease was not life-threatening and the soldiers were
feeling better, but the doctors were still searching for the cause,
Bacon said.
It was established that most of the soldiers that caught the
disease had stayed at the same place. There were two groups - the
first group had 22 soldiers from the 362nd unit for combat support
to engineering units and the other 28 soldiers from the 586th
engineering unit. Both groups had visited at different times a
warehouse in Brussels, Belgium and stayed at the same hotel in
Brussels.
The U.S. IFOR doctors had spotted the disease on January 19,
Bacon added.
