MOSTAR, Jan 11 (Hina) - Croatia's Defence Minister Gojko Susak on
Thursday met for talks with the European Union administrator of
Mostar, Hans Koschnik. Also attending was the mayor of Croat-held
west Mostar, Mijo Brajkovic.
Susak told reporters after the meeting that he had come to
Mostar because of the situation in the town and because Croatia
had co-signed the Dayton peace agreement and had witnessed the
signing of a local agreement on Mostar.
Susak said that "Croatia will get involved a little more
directly in maintaining law and order in the western and possibly
in the eastern part of Mostar as well."
Recalling that the mayor of Moslem-held east Mostar, Safet
Orucevic, had expressed a wish for Croatian police forces to be
deployed in Mostar, he said that Croatia was willing to do it.
"President Tudjman has authorized me to tell Koschnik that
we will send our police if necessary," Susak said, adding that
"at the moment it is not necessary to deploy more police forces
in Mostar."
If Croatian police were to be deployed in Mostar, they would
be placed under international command as was the case in the
Velika Kladusa area of northwestern Bosnia, he added.
Susak said he hoped progress in restoring law and order to
Mostar would be seen in the next two weeks.
He said he believed that by establishing six districts in
Mostar 80 percent of the town's problems would be solved.
