ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - The estimated three to four million
landmines were planted throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina and only few
areas may be considered clear, Olla Molvaer, a Norwegian naval
officer, told a news conference in Zagreb Tuesday.
Questioned of how long it would take to clean the country, he
said it might take as long as 30 years.
He however stressed that all parties in the conflict were
quite obliging in giving information about the mine fields.
The commanding officers with the IFOR engineering units said
they were accomplishing their tasks with littlest possible delay.
They added that several more pontoon bridges over the Sava river
might be constructed besides the existing one at Zupanja.
The Zupanja bridge would be used exclusively in military
purpose for the time being, but later -- and along with the future
pontoons -- it might be used for civilian, particularly
humanitarian needs, they added.
