VUKOVAR, Dec 2 (Hina) - The construction of a Danube-Sava canal, the
largest such project in eastern Croatia, will begin next spring in
Vukovar, Reconstruction and Development Minister Jure Radic
announced on Tuesday.
The 61 km-long canal will link the Danube River at Vukovar to the
Sava at Slavonski Samac, and will reduce passage from Central
European river ports to the Adriatic Sea by more than 420 km.
Recalling that preparations for its construction had begun more
than a year ago, Radic said that foreign companies, particularly
those from Germany, were expected to invest in building the canal.
A portion of a DM 120 million loan recently granted by the German
state of Baden-Wurttemberg would be used for the construction of
the canal, Radic added.
