CONFERENCE
$
GENEVA, Aug 21 (Hina) - As part of a session of the UN Conference
on Disarmament, which is taking place in Geneva, intensive
consultations were held on Thursday on the possible admission of
new members to the conference.
A delegation of the Republic of Croatia, which has applied
for membership, is taking part in the talks.
According to diplomatic sources, some countries propose
that all 36 candidates be admitted to the conference while others
argue that accession should be gradual, taking into account
regional position, possible influence on the efficiency of the
conference and the length of candidate status.
Under the above criteria, the most likely candidates to be
admitted are Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Portugal and Luxembourg.
